It’s several months since I’ve been able to do a Thursday walk, and so far this year all but one of the group walks have been cancelled because of rain, including todays. What a change from last year, when three out of five January walks were fine and sunny!
But Penny and I decided to walk, whatever. It was a bit dreek, rained properly for about 20 minutes, and then poured down at the end, just as we got back to the car. Wet, and at times slippery under foot, but nothing exceptional.

And on the Chiltern Way, ahead to Swyncombe Downs
Massive tree felling – don’t think they are all ash – on Sliding Hill
Interesting field pattern seen from Swyncombe Downs
More trees being cleared on the edge of the downs, leaving colourful stumps
Lone tree at the bottom of the down
St. Botolph’s Church snowdrops looking as good as ever. Just missing a bit of sunlight.
“A small building of C11 Norman origin. Building material consists of flint coursed rubble with herringbone work and ashlar limestone dressings. The roof is gabled and of old-tile. It was restored in 1833.”
For the first time, went in the church and admired the ceilings
Can’t find out any more about the origin of the ceilings. They seem fairly fresh somaybe a recent addition.
Also discovered a cemetery extension, with croci as well as snowdrops

These photos are wonderful, and a great reminder of the lovely walks we did with Wayne. Thank you. The snowdrops are beautiful – just as remembered, and I also loved the red kites. They have been released in County Durham, but haven’t really started to spread out yet, but they are seen at the NT Gibside Estate, and I’ve seen just one locally.
We’ve been hoping to get to Wallington NT near Morpeth for snowdrops – they’ve planted 1,000,000 bulbs over the last few years – but the weather has been grim, so we’ve not made it yet. Saturday looks good, but very cold, but we need to get there soon or they’ll be past their best.
Great photos as usual & splendid presentation. I’m struck with the colours in the Swyncombe down photo & the lone tree.
