Photos from walk on Thursday 1st February from East Ilsley to Beedon

Low sun beyond St. Mary’s Church, East Ilsley

The church is partly Norman with an early English style chancel and an embattled tower.

The path leadng south from East Ilsley runs parallel to the A34. The hill might be called Shrill Down.

There are a couple of walnut trees by the path.  Here’s one.

Lots of hazel trees along Green Hams Lane, pollarded maybe not too long ago.

We walked mainly along ancient lanes, lined with hedge and tree on either side. This was after coffee in the way to Beedon

To the left this field looked a bit like a green tartan

On the verge in Beedon, Trachystemon orientalis, commonly known as Abraham-Isaac-Jacob or early-flowering borage

Winter trees

Old Street Lane (lunch spot)

You know I like spotting the traces of the leaf miner beetles. Here the beetle has been long gone, but the leaf trails are fun – both sides.

Half ploughed field at Red Lane

Woolvers Barn, a bit of a ruin by Dark Lane

Did anyone spot this on the lane approaching Beedon, and the A34? Photo is looking back to whence we came. The label on the “box” is in the gallery. Ashridge Wood OBH SU47/140, where OBH stands for Operational Bore Hole. One of a series of monitors checking on the level of the water table

Finally, do check the gallery. There’s half a dozen tree silhouettes, which looked lovely against today’s blue sky.

It’s interesting how the beautiful wide views of Oxon / Berks are so different from the bleaker wide views of Durham. And winter trees can be quite beautiful.
