Gannets at Bempton Cliffs 2025

First, a six hour boat trip, “Diving Gannet Photography Spectacular” with Steve Race, Yorkshire Coast Nature’s award-winning wildlife photographer.

“Gannets dive in to the water at up to speeds of 60mph to catch their prey, which includes large fish such as Mackerel, Pollock and Herring. … We will be chumming (throwing dead fish) to encourage the Gannets to dive close to the boat, giving us excellent opportunities to capture images of these stunning birds diving in to the sea, surfacing with their fish and often fighting each other over their catch.”

They dive in

And emerge with the spoils

Sometimes a squabble

After a “chumming” session, several hundred gannets, some lucky and some still huungry

More arrive

On the way back, a curious grey seal

Later that evening on the cliffs, a barn owl swoops over the fields

Next day we try not to repeat the collection of gannet portraits taken last year, and look for light and dark:

Lastly, a gannet takes off into the setting sun

As always, many more photos in the gallery.

This one, a bit of a fluke, might even be my favourite: a raucous gannet framed by an ethereal herring gull.

If you have a favourite, let us all know in the commnents – thank you.
