Kingfisher Hide at Streatley – March 2025

GGWildlife have opened a hide in Streatley, just beyond the Swan, overlooking a small Thames backwater. It’s home territory for a pair of kingfishers, who have built a nest just out of sight from the hide. On our day we had two visits from the male, and one from a young female interloper. When the eggs hatch, the visit rate should increase; even more so if they eventually take over the nesting bank setup immediately opposite the hide. We had a private booking, and had an excellent day chatting about photography and the local (GG = Goring Gap) wildlife, all the while waiting for the star of the show.

GGWildlife’s photos of the day are here.

There were other birds

Treecreeper

Robin

Wood Pigeon

And here’s a sort of story. The male, by the way, has a partner, who was probably away making the nest. A young female checks him out (she may be his daughter, from last year).

Male, left, visited by young female

Hello, I’m here

Stop interupting, I’m fishing

After a dive, male returns, now on right, with fish

with fish

Show off.  I’ll ignore you

Well, now you’ve finished eating…  hello again,

OK, be like that

Please don’t sulk

Alright, let’s be friends

Goodbye

To get such clear pictures of kingfishers is quite exceptional. The “portraits” are really beautiful. The wood pigeon is an interesting shot too.
