Thames flooding 6th January 2024

Late afternoon.

Under the arches

Marginally higher than it was in 2003

The main channel

The car park, with car.

Contented swan family

If the barrier is 2.2m, then the water must be way more than a metre deep (4 foot?)

Hopeful heron

The Guardian has a set of UK flood pictures with two from Wallingford. One is the headline picture, and the second is “Swans swim past a submerged car in Wallingford

I can’t work out where these are taken. It’s a different submerged car from the one I pictured.

Pictures of these two cars, before they were fully submerged (assuming they weren’t taken away) are also in the Oxford Mail.  (You should be able to see the pictures without needing to sign-up)

Chester Beckett put a drone up at Crowmarsh Gifford, with three YouTube Videos:

Note that in these videos the open air pool and two cars in the car park are still visible. By the time I got there on Saturday they were submerged.

More photos in the galleries, with a set of pictures from 2003. Plus charts of river level heights.

Flood levels

[Information added 10 Jan]

The Environment Agency monitors river levels at nearly all the locks on the Thames, both upstream and downstream, and at various other points on the Thames and its tributaries.  Find all monitor points near Wallingford here.  Data is provided only for the past 5 days, so sceenshots were taken on 9 Jan to show the river levels over the recent peak.  The highest levels were arround midnight on Saturday Jan 6th.  The locks either side of Wallingford showed record highs.  Further upstream – Culham, Abingdon etc the peaks did not exceed previous records.

The plots below show the previsou record levels, but not when they occured, which are as follows:

Location (all upstream, unless stated) Date of record high
Abingdon and Sandford 9 Jan 2014
Culham 7 Aug 2008
Sutton Courtney 26 Jul 2007

Extraordinary photos, David, thank you. Both in content as in quality. The sunshine gives this awful flooding quite a magical inuendo….
