Photos from walk on 21st November from Ashbury Folly

We came for the house – Ashdown House. National Trust, said haunt of Pete Townshend “In 2010 Pete Townshend bought a 41-year lease on the property”

Odstone Coombes

The horizontal ridges in the valley are called terracettes, caused in the ice age by a process of solifluction.

If you have JStor access the definitive descrption is Scarp-Face Dry Valleys near Wantage, Oxfordshire, by Keith Paterson, 1977. It’s also covered by Peter Webber in “The UK”, 1998. Google previews some of the pages which includes description of the coombes, and (page 11) 4 theories about their origin.

The beech trees are said to have been planted by Lord Wantage to commemorate the battle of Alma in the Crimean war when he was awarded a VC. (thanks to Hedley Thorne for this detail, which I’ve not found anywhere else).

The same trees in 2021, almost the same day (Nov 18th) with slighly more colour. Monday’s snow must have had impact.

I really enjoyed my first proper walk in 7 or 8 weeks thank you David. Lovely to see everyone today and a lovely walk too.

Stunning photo of Odstone Coombesto start off the excellent slide show. I’ve also learned two new words – terracettes and solifluction!
